I’m really excited to welcome back my friend Karmen Spiljak, an award-winning Belgian-Slovenian writer and writing coach who was my very first guest. Her short story “Three Roses” has appeared on the LeVar Burton Reads podcast (yes, she does loves Star Trek!). This time, we spoke about Karmen’s new collection of stories: Dark Chronicles.
We talked about how Karmen likes to sneak in fantastical elements in her stories and how the new collection draws on The Twilight Zone and Črne Kronike (“Black Chronicles”), a section in Slovenian which gave brief accounts of all the bad stuff that had happened in town: murders, bar fights, thefts, and so on. These skeletal tales got a young Karmen imagining: what darkness lurks behind the facts? We also talked about how radio and gardening made their way into a couple of the stories in this new collection.
